New York, U.S.A.
Welcome to Yonkers, New York.
Yonkers is an inner suburb of New York City, and the fourth most populous city in the state with around 196,000 residents. Directly bordering the Bronx, Yonkers is situated only two miles north of the bustling streets of Manhattan. The city got its peculiar name back in the 17th century, when New York's first lawyer, Adrien Van der Donck, purchased a piece of land in the area. The lawyer was known as Jonker, essentially meaning young gentleman in old Dutch. Modern Yonkers comprises a number of distinct neighborhoods, and downtown is centered on a plaza known as Getty Square. Downtown houses a multitude of businesses and serves as a major retail district for both the city of Yonkers and northwest Bronx. Yonkers, which is home to a large Irish-American and Italian-American population, bares many architectural and cultural similarities with Bronx. The city is home to several large attractions, including the Hudson River Museum, the Sherwood House and the Yonkers Raceway. Shopping and dining can be found throughout the city in varying degree, but most of the commercial activity is focused around Getty Square on South Broadway. The Cross County Shopping Center and the Westchester's Ridge Hill feature a multitude of stores, and Central Park Avenue also has its fair share of stores and restaurants. Brace yourself for a plethora of ethnic dining places, because Yonkers is a diverse city with food from every imaginable culture. Thanks to the large Irish population, the city hosts one of the nation's largest St. Patrick's Day parades, and the Italian community honors its heritage with the Columbus day festival and subsequent Miss Italian-American pageant. If you're looking to live in a vibrant and diverse community right by the hustle and bustle of New York City's Manhattan, Yonkers is a strong contender.
