WILMINGTON
HEART OF THE HARBOR
Welcome to Wilmington, Los Angeles. Situated in the South Los Angeles Area, the neighborhood of Wilmington covers 9.14 square miles of land bordering Carson, Long Beach, San Pedro and Harbor City. The neighborhood is predominately Latino, with more than 85% of the population being of Hispanic origin; a high percentage compared to the city and county as a whole. Wilmington is known for its heavy concentration of industry and having access to the third-largest oil field in the United States. The neighborhood features 8 major refineries, as it lies adjacent to the Wilmington Oil Field, which was discovered in 1932. Wilmington is home to the Los Angeles Harbor College, Banning High school and ten other primary and secondary schools, as well as six parks. Parks include the Banning Recreation Center, the Wilmington Recreation Center and the Wilmington Waterfront Park, which is situated by the water between the Port of Los Angeles and Wilmington. If you’re in the area, there are numerous attractions worth visiting. Stop by the Drum Barracks Civil War Museum, the U.S Army headquarters for Southern California and the Arizona territory during the Civil war; or the Phillips 66 refinery, where you’ll find the world’s largest jack-o’-lantern. Also worth checking out is the Banning Museum, which was the 23-room residence of Phineas “Father of the Port of Los Angeles” Banning in 1864.
