THE AIR CAPITAL OF THE WORLD
Welcome to Wichita, Kansas.
Wichita is situated in south-central Kansas on the Arkansas River. Home to around 388,418 people, it is the largest city in the state. In the mid 19th century, Wichita was a trading post on the Chisholm Trail. The city was incorporated in 1870, and developed into a key destination for cattle drivers traveling from Texas to access railroads. This earned Wichita the nickname Cowtown. The city later transformed into a hub of U.S aircraft production, which instead made Wichita known as The Air Capital of the World. There are still numerous large aircraft manufacturing and design firms operating in Wichita, and the city remains a major center for the U.S. aircraft industry. Kansas' largest airport is also located in Wichita, the Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National airport. Wichita is a center for culture, media and trade, with plenty of museums, theaters, parks and entertainment venues. One of the more notable venues is the Intrust Bank Arena, a 15,004-seat multi-purpose arena located in downtown Wichita. The arena boasts 22 suites, 2 party suites and over 300 premium seats, and is home to the Wichita Thunder hockey team. The city also offers several prominent schools, such as Wichita State University the third largest in the state. As far as shopping, residents can head to the Town East Square and Town West Square, both large malls with a multitude of shops and restaurants. A popular spot foe entertainment is the Century II Performing Arts & Convention center, a unique venue featuring a dramatic, dome-like architectural style in downtown Wichita. Old Town Wichita is situated in downtown, and features a large cluster of hip nightclubs and bars, fabulous restaurants, shops and more. Old town also has a number of residential structures, many of which area redeveloped historical warehouses. The most notable residential areas in the city are Riverside and College Hill. Riverside is located northwest of downtown, surrounding the green expanse of the Riverside Park, and to the east you'll find College Hill, a beautiful historic neighborhood. One of the more festive events during the year is the Wichita River Festival. This merry festivity is held in downtown and has been a tradition since 1972. During the festival, visitors and residents can enjoy musical entertainment, a parade, a food court, fireworks and much more. Over 370,000 patrons attend each year, so if you're looking for a great party and lots of people this is it!
