WELLINGTON-HARRINGTON
A COLORFUL NEIGHBORHOOD
Welcome to Wellington-Harrington, Cambridge.
This neighborhood is also known as Area 3, and is bounded by Hampshire Street, Broadway and Grand Junction railroad, as well as Somerville town. Wellington-Harrington is home to around 6,500 residents and is the second most densely populated neighborhood in Cambridge. Wellington-Harrington is a mostly residential neighborhood, however it imbricates with the Inman and Kendall Square, two major commercial centers. Residents also have access to the retail strip along Cambridge Street, where plenty of stores, service shops and restaurants are situated. The neighborhood is very diverse, with the highest population of immigrants anywhere in Cambridge. In fact, in 1990, a total of 40% of residents were born outside of the United States, creating a very colorful neighborhood with a plethora of languages spoken throughout. Around the neighborhood's inception, most people who lived here were of Irish, Canadian and Portuguese ancestry, as well as eastern European primarily from Sweden and Russia. Wellington-Harrington features plenty of public recreational space, including the Donnelly Field, a major athletic park, as well as the Gannet/Warren Pals Park and the Gold Star Street Mothers Pool. The pool is located at the corner of Berkshire and Cambridge Street, and is the only city-owned outdoor pool, catering to residents of all ages.
