WABAN
A WEALTHY COMMUNITY
Welcome to Waban, Newton.
Waban is one of the thirteen villages that comprise the city of Newton. The neighborhood was named after a man named Waban, the first Indian in Massachusetts to convert to Christianity in 1646. The man actually lived on what is today the village of Nonantum, but the area around the Waban village was one of his favorite hunting grounds. Waban is today one of the most affluent zip codes in the country, and the neighborhood ranked only behind Kenilworth, Illinois and Short Hills, New Jersey in Washington Post's 2013 study. As far as green space, there aren't really any large public parks in Waban. However, the village partly covers the Brae Burn Country Club, an exclusive country and golf club with two famous courses. The neighborhood is pretty devoid of dining places and retail, but there are a few restaurants in and smaller stores in the area. For more shopping and dining, residents can turn to surrounding villages like Newton Highlands and Oak Hill, where you can find several shopping malls with shops, food and entertainment. Travel down to the Webster Conservation Area for a scenic outing in the forest, hiking and rock climbing, as well as pond fishing. And when you're in the area, check out the Chestnut Hill Square, an open-air shopping and dining plaza with plenty of options!
