VAN NUYS
A DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH
Welcome to Van Nuys, California.
With around 136,500 residents, Van Nuys is both a district and neighborhood in the heart of San Fernando Valley. Many people are unaware that Van Nuys was actually founded and named after the renowned Isaac Newton Van Nuys, who purchased the San Fernando Valley Ranch in the 1870s. After raising livestock and establishing the Los Angeles Farming and Milling Company in 1880, he became one of the major entrepreneurs in the area both as a businessman and as a banker. As Los Angeles grew at rapid speed, he began to realize the potential for building expansion of his own land. Hence, Isaac Newton Van Nuys began selling lots and eventually founded the City of Van Nuys in 1911. In 1915, Van Nuys was annexed by the City of Los Angeles, which provided the water the community required for further growth. In modern day, Van Nuys is a pretty diverse place, with a substantial portion of the population being of Latino origin. The population is young compared to other areas in the county, since many residents are below 30 years of age. The neighborhood has several good schools, such as the Van Nuys Senior High School and the Columbus Avenue Elementary School. Residents also have access to plenty of public space, including the Van Nuys Recreation Area, which features an auditorium and multipurpose community room, as well as barbecue pits, picnic areas, ball courts, a playground and an indoor gymnasium. Other parks include the Delano Park by the Sylvan Park Elementary School, and the Woodley Park in Sepulveda Basin Recreation area; situated behind the Sepulveda Dam. In terms of shopping and dining, there is an abundance to choose from on Van Nuys Boulevard, which runs through the neighborhood and features a plethora of restaurants, service businesses and shops of every kind! Finally, it is worth mentioning that Van Nuys is home to the busiest airport for general aviation in the world; the Van Nuys Airport so far away places are never too far away!
