Welcome to Upper Market, San Francisco.
Also referred to as the Castro district, this neighborhood is the epicenter of San Francisco's gay-life. The upscale North side of Market is home to a predominately LGTB community where you'll find a delicious blend of cafes, restaurants, and obviously, gay bars. The pride and joy of the neighborhood is the gorgeous Castro Theater, which was built in 1922 and at the time only a medium-sized cinema on the block. Today, anyone from art-film lovers to old-musical fans can find something in the always-packed schedule of shows. Here, you can see nostalgic black and white movies from the past and a wide array of independent pictures from around the world. On Halloween the area lights up to its max, as the Castro/Upper Market is the place everyone goes to celebrate. Revel in the festive atmosphere while dressed up in your best costume; this is where it all happens. Castro/Upper Market is a neighborhood of not only open-minded bars and chic restaurants, but with a ton of little shops where you can find almost anything. In addition, the neighborhood largely escaped the 1906 quake and is beautifully adorned with breathtaking, restored Victorian houses and impeccably landscaped front gardens and of course, stunning hilltop views.
