AREA IV
Cambridge, MA
HOME TO MIT
Welcome to Area Two, Cambridge.
Area IV is one of thirteen neighborhoods in Cambridge that were built on a landfill and got designated area numbers. While most of the areas have since received names like Agassiz and Strawberry Hill, Area Two usually goes by its original name. However, the neighborhood is often referred to as "MIT", since it almost completely consists of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Surrounded by Broadway and Main Street, Charles River and Boston & Albany Railroad, Area 2 is home to mainly undergraduate or graduate students. Most of the student body lives in the MIT dormitories or fraternity houses. MIT and Area 2 has easy access to public transportation at Kendall Square, while the beautiful Charles River Reservation comprises the main local recreational asset. The Charles River offers plenty of activities, including an annual swimming competition where residents from surrounding areas can participate. You'll find people down here fishing, sunbathing, biking and running and even fishing. In fact, you can find quite a lot of species including black crappie, calico bass, pickerel and even yellow perch in these waters! By car, residents can quickly get to the City of Boston through The Harvard Bridge and Longfellow Street.
