TAMPA
Florida, U.S.A.
CIGAR CAPITAL OF THE WORLD
Welcome to Tampa, Florida. This city of right above 350,000 residents is located on the West Coast of beautiful Florida, with its nearby beaches and swaying palm trees.
The word Tampa was thought to mean sticks of fire to the Native American tribe that once dwelled in today's Tampa Bay. During the early 20th century, with its proximity to Cuba and the influx of immigrant workers, the cigar industry became the backbone of Tampa's economy. In 1929, a staggering 500 million cigars were rolled in the city, and Tampa earned the nickname of Cigar Capital of the World. Modern day Tampa is known for more than just its tobacco industry however; it is ethnically diverse community is packed with festivals almost every day of the year. There's always a party going on in Tampa, from the Tampa Bay Margarita Festival to the Sunset Music Festival and the Springfest on Harbour Island. So shake your body to the music and dine your way through the city as you enjoy a most spectacular food scene. Food trucks, farm-to-table cuisine and international gastro-pubs will treat you to incredible flavors including the freshest seafood your taste buds will ever experience. Surf, sand and sun is never far away in Tampa and it will take you less than an hour to reach any of the glorious beaches around the city. Place your sun recliner on the strands of Clearwater Beach or ride the waves in Indian Rock Beach, and spend a day relaxing at Treasure Island. If sports is more your thing, know that Tampa has no less than three major league sports teams in football, hockey and baseball. So grab your team shirt and cheer and beer the day away! Finally, Tampa is absolutely packed with Arts and Culture. Check your level of sophistication at the Tampa Museum of Art, enjoy an array of cultural festivals or travel back in time at one of the many history museums Tampa has to offer. For performing arts, definitely have a go at the Straz Center. The best of it all is that you can enjoy (almost) all these activities without ever having to drive, thanks to Tampa's new streetcar system. These awesome trolleys run late on weekends, which is a major plus for safe party going.
