SURPRISE
Arizona, U.S.A.
FULL OF SURPRISES
Welcome to Surprise, Arizona
Surprise is located in Maricopa County and is home to around 117,000 residents. Since 2000, Surprise has seen an incredible boost with a 281% population increase, making it the second-fastest expanding municipality in the greater Phoenix metropolitan area. What was once just a square mile of farmland in 1938 turned into Arizona's largest city in less than a century, and today Surprise is a burgeoning place with plenty of unique features and a charming personality. The city was named Surprise because the wife of founder Mae Statier's commented she would be surprised if the town ever amounted to much. Apparently she would have been very much surprised and proud indeed! Part of the rapid growth can be contributed to the influx of tens of thousands of retirees who moved to the city in the 1990s and early 2000s. The attraction was the Sun City Grand, an age-restricted resort-like community, home to a large part of the city's inhabitants. Surprise is home to the spring training home to Kansas City Royals and the Texas Rangers baseball teams, so grab your fellow fans and head over to the Surprise Stadium for a hot dog, a beer, and some serious cheering! If your thing is tennis, venture off to the award-winning Surprise Tennis Racquet Complex, which hosts various professional events throughout the year. In true Arizona fashion, Surprise offers abundant outdoor possibilities. With nearly 30,000 acres of marvelous expanse, White Tanks Mountain Regional Park has more than enough land to go around for curious adventures. Surprise has numerous fun events to take part in year-round, including Second Sundays in the Park, featuring free concerts in spring and fall. For fine art, check out the Surprise City Art, which boasts various stunning collections. Other venues include the Valley Vista Performing Arts Center and the West Valley Arts HQ, as well as the esteemed West Valley Conservatory of Ballet. Whatever your arts of choice, Surprise has a fantastic venue to satisfy your sophisticated cravings!
