STOCKTON
California, U.S.A.
MUDVILLE
Welcome to Stockton, California.
Stockton is a city located in north-central California, on the San Joaquin River in San Joaquin Valley. Stockton is home to around 300,900 people and is the seat of San Joaquin County. The city is known for being home to the University of the Pacific since 1923. The history of Stockton goes back to the earliest settlement in 1848, and the city developed as a river port and road hub during the California Gold Rush. Back in its early days, Stockton went by many names, such as Tuleburg, Fat City and Mudville. Eventually Stockton was chosen in honor of Commodore Robert F. Stockton, and became the first community in California to bear a name of Spanish origin. The City of Stockton was incorporated on July 23, 1850. The city has undergone extensive revitalization since the 1990s, with developments including many new and remodeled buildings. Some of these include the Bob Hope Theater, Regal City Centre Cinemas and the Lexington Waterfront Hotel, Hotel Stockton, Stockton Arena and the Stockton Ballpark. The old parking lot in front of Hotel Stockton has been turned into a public space named Dean DeCarli Waterfront Square, a multi-use design including features like beautiful landscaping, viewing platforms and a cascading waterfall. The Plaza of DeCarli Square is a popular spot for visitors and residents, and often hosts numerous music, art and religious events; as well as festivals, Farmers Markets and various community gatherings. Residents also have access to the new Downtown Marina and the adjacent Joan Dara Promenade, which is situated along the pretty South Shore of the Stockton Deep Water Channel. In terms of culture, there is plenty to choose from, including the Fox California Theatre and the University of Pacific's Brubeck Institute. The latter is known for its excellent music program and nationally renowned Jazz Quartet. Sport fanatics can visit the Stockton Arena, which is home to several sports teams and often features famous artists. Past performers include Gwen Stefani, Carrie Underwood and Bob Dylan.
