Welcome to Springfield, Massachusetts.
Springfield is situated on the eastern bank of the Connecticut River in Western New England, and is home to around 153,000 people. Springfield has a number of nicknames, including The City of Firsts, because of its many innovations, The City of Homes, due to the large collection of Victorian buildings, and most importantly, Hoop City; Springfield College was in fact the birthplace of basketball in 1891. Springfield is located around 24 miles from the capital of Connecticut, Hartford, and is part of the Hartford-Springfield region. The region is also known as the Knowledge Corridor, because it hosts more than 160,000 university students and boasts over 32 universities and liberal arts colleges; comprising the second-largest concentration of higher-learning institutions in the country. The City of Springfield is home to schools like the Springfield College, Western New England University, American International College and Springfield Technical Community College, attracting over 20,000 students per year combined. Besides being home to world-class education, Springfield also offers plenty of fun for any age. For instance, Springfield is home to the largest and most popular amusement park in New England; Six Flags New England. The park features 10 roller coasters, including the Bizarro, which has been ranked No.1 in the world several years in a row. Those who enjoy more refined recreation can head to one of the many museums town; including the Museum of Fine Arts, the George Walter Vincent Smith Art Museum and the Springfield Science Museum. Not to forget, Springfield also features the first planetarium in the United States, and the famous Titanic Museum.
