Illinois, U.S.A.
Welcome to Springfield, Illinois.
Springfield is the state capital and the largest city in central Illinois with around 117,000 residents. European Americans settled today's Springfield in the late 1810s, and the most famous past resident is Abraham Lincoln. The former President lived in the city between 1837-1861, and moved out when he went to the White House to become the leader of the country. There are numerous historic sites in Springfield dedicated to Abraham Lincoln, including the presidential museum, his private home, and the historical town of New Salem a short drive away. Springfield is nestled in flat plains and partly hilly terrain by the Sangamon River, and Lake Springfield provides residents with a beautiful respite and a place to enjoy various recreational activities. The city is home to a strong literary tradition, with prominent figures of the arts like Vachel Lindsay and Edgar Lee Masters. Today, the Illinois State Library Gwendolyn Brooks Building features the names of 35 Illinois authors on its exterior, and the literary heritage and legacy remain a strong part of Springfield. Springfield is a dream for the culturally refined, and those who enjoy orchestras, live theatre and opera can visit the Hoogland Center for the Arts in downtown Springfield. The venue boasts spectacular architecture, since the building was originally Springfield's Masonic Temple, before being redeveloped. Several movies have been shot in Springfield, including Legally Blonde 2, and numerous renowned musicians have called the city home, such as Artie Matthews and Morris Day. If you're in town, don't miss some of the most popular food items, like corn dog on a stick, which locals claim was invented in the city under the name Cozy Dog. Another favorite is the horseshoe sandwich, which is a local treat you won't find anywhere else.
