MIDTOWN’S AND DOWNTOWN’S HEART
Welcome to SoNo, Atlanta. SoNo stands for South of North Avenue, and is a sub-district of downtown Atlanta, located just south of the Midtown area.
SoNo was named in 2005 to establish a stronger identity and gain a more hip vibe, but the locals have never really connected with the new name. The area is constantly being renewed in effort to revive the area with a modern cultural identity, as a way of compensating for the fact that SoNo has been largely underdeveloped. The hope is that the neighborhood will eventually unite the Midtown and Downtown commercial districts, which are otherwise separated. The SoNo neighborhood features plenty of prominent institutions such as the Emory University Hospital Midtown, the Atlanta Civic Center, Shakespeare Tavern, as well as the tallest high-rise of the city the Bank of America Plaza. SoNo also has a few historic landmarks, including the Baltimore Block and the Rufus M. Rose House. The focal point of the neighborhood though, is the Renaissance and Central Parks, where many festivals have been held. SoNo is a truly diverse neighborhood with a mix of all kinds of residential construction; single-family, town homes, apartments, skyscrapers, modern condos and more. In addition, the area has a vivacious nightlife and a burgeoning food scene, so residents and visitors do not lack entertainment in the least!
