Welcome to Santa Ana, California.
Santa Ana is the county seat of Orange County and home to nearly 330,000 people. Located in the rolling hills of Southern California, Santa Ana is part of the Greater Los Angeles Area; the second largest metropolitan area in the country with nearly 18,000,000 residents. Santa Ana has ranked fourth in the country of cities the same size, both in regard to population density and safety. Santa Ana's history goes back a long time, and the city's name emerged when Mexican Friar Junpero Serra named the area Vallejo de Santa Ana' (Santa Ana Valley) in 1760. In 1776, Mission San Juan Capistrano was established, and back then, Vallejo de Santa Ana' composed most of today's Orange County. After the Mexican-American war ended in 1848, the area became part of the United States and American settlers arrived in what is now Santa Ana. The city was incorporated as a city in 1886, and became the Orange County seat in 1889. In the 21st century, Santa Ana is a fully developed city with several distinct districts. Downtown Santa Ana is the heart of the city, and features a plethora of shopping opportunities as well as residential options. Downtown also houses the Ronald Reagan Federal Building and Courthouse, as well as a numerous historic homes dating to the late 19th century. Entertainment can be found in the Midtown district along Main St., which has features like the Bowers Museum, Main Place Mall and the Discovery Science Center. Those who have little ones can head to the east side of the city, and pay the Santa Ana Zoo a visit; a place notable for its large collection of monkeys and species from South and Central America. To the south, residents have access to the South Coast Plaza, a primary destination with plenty of shopping as well as a few high-rise office and apartment buildings. As far as outdoor recreation and attractions, Santa Ana's surrounding areas offer a number of options. The nearby Disneyland and Knotts Berry Farm amusement parks are major tourist traps, and within 20 minutes, residents can reach several great beaches. The nearby coastal communities Huntington Beach and Newport Beach offer world-class shopping, dining, boating and surfing it doesn't get much better than that.
