CITY OF SCI-FCI MOVIES
Welcome to San Rafael, California.
The city of around 58,000 residents is the county seat of Marin County, located in the north region of the San Francisco Bay. In 1970, when movie director George Lucas came to San Rafael to film sci-fi flick THX 1138, the city became a center for the entertainment industry. George Lucas founded the production company LucasFilm, which is best known for the gigantic movie series Star Wars and Indiana Jones. Thanks to LucasFilm, the town became a hub for filmmakers and game developers, and several major studios are located in the city. Movies like American Graffiti and Gattaca were filmed in downtown San Rafael and the Marin County Civic Center, and the new-age music program Hearts of Space have had their home base in San Rafael since 2004. San Rafael is home to a several parks, such as the China Camp State Park and the McNears Beach Park. The latter has a seasonal summer pool, which is open to the public for a modest fee. Other community parks are Albert Park, Boyd Park, Gerstle Park and Pickleweed Park, as well as the Terra Linda Recreational Center. The city also boasts its own sports team, the San Rafael Pacifics baseball club. The club is young as it was founded in 2012, but it has already played 42 home games and is a member of the American Baseball League.
