Utah, U.S.A.
Welcome to Salt Lake City, Utah.
Salt Lake City is the capital of Utah and the most populous city in the state with around 191,180 residents. Salt Lake was originally named Great Salt Lake City, because of its proximity to the Great Salt Lake, but the word great was dropped in 1868. Nestled against the snow-capped Wasatch Mountains, this is the city of skiing and snowboarding! With eight ski resorts within just 50 miles of the city, including Alta, Brighton, Solitude and Snowbird, tourists come from all over to enjoy the many winter sport activities the city has to offer. In summer months, the hilly terrain of the mountains is used for mountain biking, rock climbing, hiking and camping; while the many small reservoirs and rivers are popular for activities like boating and fishing. Salt Lake City has many neighborhoods, and the eastern portion of town is slightly more expensive than the western part. Part of the reason is the spectacular panoramic views from inclined ground in the eastern portion, as well as the railroad in the western half. Since housing is more affordable in the western area, this part also features a bigger diversity both economically and culturally. The western part of town is home to a wide range of people from different faiths, ethnicities and backgrounds, living in the neighborhoods of Rose Park, Poplar Grove and Glendale. Northeast of Downtown Salt Lake City is called The Avenues, where you'll find lots of Victorian era homes as well as a great number of intimate restaurants and quaint shops housed in old retail spaces. The Avenues and Federal Heights neighborhoods also feature many gated communities with massive multi-million mansions with impressive views of the valley, comprising the most coveted real estates in the city. Salt Lake City is home to a variety of great attractions, including the Salt Lake Temple, a Mormon church and architectural masterpiece that took over 40 years to build. The city is also known for being the home of the 2002 Winter Olympics, as well as something much less sporty namely the world's first KFC store. And if you're into independent music, brace yourself, because Salt Lake City and surrounding areas are famous for their many awesome local bands.
