California, U.S.A.
Welcome to Riverside, California.
Riverside is a city situated in the scenic landscape of Inland Empire, approximately 60 miles east of Los Angeles. The city is part of the Greater Los Angeles area, and with around 303,870 residents, it is the most populous city in the Riverside County. In 1871, the first orange trees were planted, but it wasn't until 1874 that the famous citrus industry took off. It all began when one of the earliest settlers, Eliza Tibbets, received a personal gift of three Brazilian navel orange trees. The trees were sent to her by the horticulturist William Saunders, and came from Bahia in Brazil. While the Bahia orange had not worked out in Florida, it thrived in Southern California and so it began the prosperous citrus industry of Riverside. Today, Riverside honors its history with the California Citrus State Historic Park, an open-air museum where the citrus industry's role in the history of California is told. The museum captures the time when citrus was king in California, and features the Parent Washington Navel Orange Tree, the last one remaining of the two original navel orange trees in the state. Another landmark is the historic Mission Inn, a historic hotel in downtown Riverside and the largest Mission Revival Style building in the United States. These days, the hotel is called The Mission Inn Hotel & Spa and has had many famous guests throughout the years including several presidents. Pat and Richard Nixon even got married in what is now the Presidential Lounge, and Nancy and Ronald Reagan honeymooned at the inn. Other classic places to visit include the Riverside Fox Theater, where the first showing of Gone with the Wind' took place. The old cinema is today remodeled into a performing arts center holding 1,600 seats, and a large stage featuring Broadway-style performances and big artists like Sheryl Crow. For shopping at the large stores, visitors can head to the open-air Riverside Plaza and the Galleria at Tyler regional mall, while Main Street downtown offers more personal boutique-style shops. The city hosts a plethora of festivities, and an event that is quite unique to Riverside is the Riverside Airshow. The show takes place at the Riverside Municipal Airport and attracts around 70,000 people each year. Spectators can enjoy areal performances, over 200 acres of aircraft displays, a car show and even a military vehicle display, as well as children's activities, food and refreshments, and much more!
