This small beach city is located in Ventura County and is surrounded by the city of Oxnard and the Santa Barbara Channel. Port Hueneme is home to around 22,140 people, and its name derives from the Spanish spelling of the Chumash wene me, meaning Resting Place. The city was incorporated in 1948, and both the port of Naval Base Ventura County and Port of Hueneme today lie within city limits. Between 1871 and 1895, Hueneme was the second largest grain shipping port on the Pacific coast. The Port of Hueneme is today the only deep water port between the Port of Los Angeles and the Port of San Francisco, as well as the only Navy-controlled harbor between San Diego Bay and Puget Sound in the state of Washington.
Port Hueneme is well known for its excellent surfing opportunities, thanks to its south-facing sand beach. The mile-long beach is not only popular among those who enjoy riding the waves; it also contains a wooden pier for fishing. The Waterfront Promenade, also called Lighthouse Promenade, is a paved public access path along the shoreline. The beautiful promenade features two historic sites at the viewpoints 1872 Wharf and Oxnard Packing House, as well as picnic tables and barbecue days.
Since 1998, the city has been holding a theme-based beach festival, the "Hueneme Beach Festival, which spans over 2 days in mid/late August. Residents come together for this merry celebratory event to enjoy entertainment like live music, games, attractions, food and exhibits.
