California, U.S.A.
Welcome to Pomona, California.
Pomona is situated in the Pomona Valley, beween the Inland Empire and San Gabriel Valley. With around 149,000 residents, Pomona is the 5th largest city in Los Angeles County. The city was incorporated in 1888 and named after the ancient Roman goddess of fruit, Pomona. Despite there being no fruit trees in the area at the time, Pomona was the winning entry in a contest to name the city in 1875. By the 1880s however, the arrival of railroads and Coachella Valley water had turned it into the western center of the citrus-growing region. In the 1920s, Pomona was an affluent city known as Queen of the Citrus Belt, boasting one of the highest median incomes in the United States. In the 1940s era, the city was used as a movie-previewing location for motion picture studios, who used it to see how their films would work with a middle class audience. The community of Pomona is strongly tied to its religion institutions, and there are more than 120 churches representing various faiths in the city. History buffs may enjoy a tour around these historic structures, as the beautiful European church design and architecture offers an interesting glimpse of other eras. Arts and culture is also a large part of Pomona's identity, there are numerous venues worth a visit. Both the Ygnacio Palomares Adobe and the La Casa Primera de Rancho San Jose are listed as historic places, and the Pomona Fox Theater offers excellent entertainment for the sophisticated thespians. For local art, stop by the Pomona Envisions the Future mural in the vibrant Art's District of Pomona. Those who are into cars and fast speeds should know that Pomona is the site of the Fairplex, which hosts the NHRA Auto Club Raceway at Pomona. The city also hosts a Classic Car Show, which is widely considered to be a Southern California Classic, as well a Drag Racing Competition.
