PLEASANT HILL
California, U.S.A.
THE HOME OF THE DOME
Welcome to Pleasant Hill, California.
Pleasant Hill is a city in Contra Costa County, located in the East Bay of the San Francisco Area. The population is around 33,000 people and the town was incorporated in 1961. For most of Pleasant Hill's existence, the city did not have a real downtown or Main Street, but in 1991 planning began to redevelop the area around Monument Blvd and Contra Costa Blvd. This re-construction led to the new downtown Pleasant Hill, providing an outdoor shopping center designed like a typical suburban main street. Cool enough to qualify as a must-visit is the Dome theater, a 895-seat movie theater that opened in 1967. At its inception, this unique igloo-shaped roof became an iconic landmark for the brand new city. Renowned architect Vincent G. Raney designed the theater, which features an extraordinary 50-foot-high domed ceiling, and an oversized screen. At first, the screen was actually curved as well, but today a more functional flat screen has replaced it and four single-screen auditoriums have been added. If you come here for a viewing, don't expect to see the latest cinema from Hollywood this is a place where you'll find a fine selection of mainly independent and foreign films. Pleasant Hill has quite a plethora of parks, among which are Dinosaur Hill Park, Pleasant Hill Park, Pleasant Oaks Park, Paso Nogal Park and a long list of others. So whether you're looking for a single stroll in the fresh air or a picnic day with your family, this little divine city has got you more than covered.
