California, U.S.A.
Welcome to Pinole, California.
The City of Pinole is located in Contra Costa County and has a population of around 20,000 people. The name Pinole derives from the Native American word for flour, specifically that made of maize, chia and various other grasses and herbs. The story goes that the Spaniards were fed pinole during an expedition, and hence they named their camp El Pinole. Pinole is located on tumbling green lands of the West Contra Costa shorelines, and its well-kept natural beauty is accented by a large number of historic residences. Most of the buildings were constructed for individuals working at the Pinole or Hercules Power Plant, and are still largely in good condition throughout the city's Old Town Area. The architecture is in the style of Queen Anne Cottages, Hip Roof Cottages and Bungalows, simple in character and placed in neat neighborhood groups. The city has a plethora of parks, such as the Amber Swartz Park, the Bayfront Park, Canyon Drive Park and Fernandez Park, to only name a few. Several of the parks offer picnic areas and playgrounds, as well as baseball and basketball courts. Pinole residents are no strangers of a good time, and in June the city and Northern California Cruisers Car Club hold a Classic Car Show in the Fernandez Park and Old Town Pinole. The event is free and invites both visitors and residents to explore the display of cars or register their own classic vehicles. The warmth of Pinole's tight-knit community is displayed during the Pinole Community Service Day, where residents participate as volunteers for three-hour hands-one service projects. The event has been very successful, and last year nearly 100 volunteers came together to improve the quality of life in this wonderful city!
