California, U.S.A.
Welcome to Petaluma, California.
This city of around 58,000 people is located in Sonoma County, and is home to the Rancho Petaluma Adobe; a National Historic Landmark. General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo founded the landmark in 1836, and the adobe is today considered one of the most pristinely preserved buildings from its era in Northern California. The name Petaluma comes from the Miwok phrase peta luuma, which means hill backside, probably deriving from Petaluma's close location to the Sonoma Mountain. Much of Petaluma's downtown center is restored, with many buildings having survived the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. The city is proud of its culture, and if you are into art you should check out the Petaluma Arts center; a vibrant spot where you will find modern art and events like the annual El Dia de los Muertos. Further into the historic downtown, you'll find dozens of galleries with exhibitions ranging from handcrafted jewelry to contemporary sculptures and paintings. During the Second Saturday Art Walks in spring and summer, you can learn more about the artists from the gallery owners themselves. There's no lack of entertainment in Petaluma, as you have everything from musicals to indie-pop and rock and roll playing in one of the many unique venues. One example is the Mystic Theatre, which was built in 1911 for vaudeville shows, now hosting musicians that master musical arts ranging from blue grass and jazz to heavy metal. If you'd rather catch a movie, check out the Art deco-inspired Boulevard Cinemas for a cozy night with popcorn in the dark. Aside from an abundance of urban recreation, there is much to be said about the beautiful nature surrounding Petaluma. You have outdoor adventures like golf, hiking, bird watching, river-activities and more, right at your doorstep.
