California, U.S.A.
Welcome to Palm Desert, California. Despite a mere 48,000 residents, the town is a major center of growth in the Palm Springs area and a popular getaway for people from colder places in the US and Canada. Palm Desert doesn’t only attract snowbirds however; many Californians and others who enjoy sun on a daily basis have relocated here lately thanks to the affordable and lucrative housing market – even celebrities like Bill Gates have homes in this desert oasis. Back in the day, the town was known as Old MacDonald Ranch, but in the 1920s that changed after date palms were planted and the area switched its name to Palm Village. In 1951, after the Palm Desert Corporation began developing real estate, the town received its current name. Shopaholics won’t have to lay stranded in boredom by the pool – Palm Desert is a major shopping destination with the El Paseo Drive being the said equivalent of Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. Music connoisseurs can marvel at the Palm Desert Scene, which is a unique musical genre heavily influenced by stoner rock. Palm Desert is known for being a great place to retire; hence over fifty percent of the town’s population is over 55. And with great flat lands and lots of time on your hands, what do you do? Golf of course! Palm Desert is home to over 30 golf courses and The Firecliff course is listed as #13 in Golf Magazine’s "Best Courses you can Play" in California. Families may enjoy a day at the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens, a combination zoo and botanical garden featuring a wide array of desert plants and animals. The little ones may especially enjoy the animal hospital where sick and wounded critters receive top-notch care. Grown-ups can spend an evening wining and dining at one of the many restaurants such as Cuistot, a luxurious spot for French Cuisine, or the Ristorante Mamma Gina for Italian flavors. And once hunger is satisfied, why not check out the McCallum Theatre, a dramatic affair of 1,127 seats and previous performing legends like Johnny Cash.
