Welcome to North Beach, San Francisco.
Named as one of the Great Neighborhoods in America, this is the Little Italy of San Francisco, as it has long been home to a large Italian American population. The neighborhood's Italian roots are displayed in the form of a wide number of restaurants, which share the streets with a plethora of culturally diverse food places and shops. Today, the area is a nightlife mecca, and people from all over the city come here to indulge in the animated bar and club scene. The residential blocks are made up of young, metropolitan professionals, as well as families and Chinese immigrants from the nearby China Town. Residents and visitors can enjoy themselves during the North Beach street fair on Grand Avenue during Father's Day, which is one of the city's largest. In addition, in celebration to its rich past, North Beach also hosts a large Columbus Day and Italian Fair with a cheerful parade that stretches from Columbus Avenue to San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park. Interesting landmarks to visit include the Saints Peter and Paul Church, known as The Italian Cathedral of the West. Iconic to both the city of San Francisco and the North Beach's Italian past, the church was where Joe DiMaggio married his first wife and came for photos after his marriage to no one less than Marilyn Monroe.
