Virginia, U.S.A.
Welcome to Newport News, Virginia. This small town with a population of approximately 180,000 is typically associated with the American Southwest.
What is now Newport News was once part of Warwick County, in the British Colony of Virginia led by King Charles I. Originally, the name of the town was Newportes Newes, and the explanation behind that has been subject to several theories and avid speculation among locals. The best-known explanation is that when an early group of Jamestown colonists left on a ship to return to England after the Starving Time, they encountered another fleet of supply ships under Governor Thomas West, who ordered them to turn around. Hence, according to this theory, the community was named for Newport's good news. Newport boasts plenty of the gorgeous scenery that Virginia is famous for, and one can enjoy the pretty outdoors by visiting the Nolan Trail, a local favorite. Go for a run in the trail or take a romantic walk by the tranquil Lake Maury. Every year, the whole city hits the trail for the Mariner's Museum 10K Pirate Run. The city is also home to America's second largest park, the Newport News Park. Believe it or not, it is so big that there is even a designated field solely for the purpose of flying model airplanes! Newport not only a great place for education (top 6% in the country), dining (check out Newport News Restaurant Week) and culture (Marine World museum is the largest marinate museum in the world), but also for environmental living. This little town has been named one of the countries greenest cities so if you like fresh air and clean surroundings, this is a place for you! While housing prices are slightly higher than the national average, unemployment here is among the lowest in the America.
