Welcome to Montgomery, Alabama.
Montgomery is the state capital and home to around 205,800 residents. The city is beautifully situated on the Alabama River in the Gulf Coastal Plain, boasting a spectacular skyline. Its most prominent feature is the RSA tower, reaching 375 feet above ground. Downtown Montgomery lies right on the southern bank of the Alabama River and features several historic and government buildings, including the Alabama State Capitol and the Baptist Church where Martin Luther King Jr. was pastor. The city was incorporated in 1819 and was chosen as the state capital in 1846. During the mid-20th century, Montgomery was the site of many important events in the African-American Civil Rights Movement, including the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Today, Montgomery is a thriving city with plenty of prominent institutions and companies. Among the acclaimed schools in Montgomery is the Auburn University at Montgomery, and one of the bigger employers in the city is Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama. The city also features plenty of cultural attractions, including the Alabama Shakespeare Festival and the renowned Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts. In fact, Montgomery boasts one of the biggest arts scenes of any mid-sized city in America. Montgomery also has a very noteworthy music scene, with legends like Nat King Cole having their roots in the city. With a rich history of award-winning musical performers, Montgomery is well-known for its many lively music venues. The city also boasts more than 1600 acres of parkland, with 24 community centers, two tennis centers, 90 softball fields and 65 playgrounds! Kids may enjoy a visit to the Montgomery Zoo, which has over 500 animals from five different continents; living in 40 acres of barrier-free habitats.
