Tennessee, U.S.A.
Welcome to the home of Graceland.
Memphis, TN is home to the Blues and Rock n Roll, but can sometimes be out shined for being known as the home of Elvis Presley which is true as well. The Blues started as far back as 1909 in Memphis with W.C. Handy writing the Memphis Blues, which has been considered the first blues song ever written on paper. 1928 brings The Orpheum Theatre to Memphis, replacing the Grand Opera House. And, by 1954 Elvis Presley gave his first concert in Memphis. The history of music in Memphis is undeniable, but so is the history of some of the most monumental moments in U.S. history. Any East Coaster knows the significance of Clarence Saunders opening the first Piggly Wiggly store in 1916. In 1960, the Federal court ended segregation in the city's public libraries, schools, parks and recreational areas. Only eight years later (1968), Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, TN. Nine years later the country loses another icon when Elvis Presley dies in his home at Graceland. Today, Memphis combines a copious history with present-day charm. Taking its cue from its roots, Memphis moves forward in every aspect of life and gives its locals and visitors more than they could ever expect. History, music, art, and down-home cooking, Memphis is a place you will always remember and a place that brings contentment to anyone who lives here.
