California, U.S.A.
A SMALL SHORELINE CITY
Welcome to Martinez, California.
The City of Martinez is located in Contra Costa County and has a population of roughly 36,000 people. The history of the city goes back to the Gold Rush years, when Martinez was the only crossing on Carquinez Strait and served as a way station. Around the time of the city's incorporation around 1880, Martinez was home to John Muir, a Scottish-American activist who was instrumental in preserving Northern California nature. The city of Martinez raised a monument in his honor in the form of the John Muir National Historic Site. The more dense downtown area is worth a visit for its vast number of old and preserved buildings, and while people often think that Martinez is primarily a refinery town, it is very much surrounded by water and open space. Martinez is one of two cities in the San Francisco Bay Area where the Bay Area Ridge Trail and the San Francisco Bay Trail coincide. The Bay Trail is an upcoming project that will allow bikers and hikers to travel by foot all the way around the San Francisco and San Pablo bays, on a no less than 400-mile total stretch. Visitors can enjoy the views at the beautiful Martinez Regional Shoreline, or have a drink at the Barrel Aged Restaurant & Cocktail Lounge. The Bay Area Adventure Tours offer plenty of fun like the Napa Wine tour, and the California Magic Dinner theatre provides terrific meals while guests can enjoy an entertaining play.
