MANHATTAN BEACH
California, U.S.A.
THE COVETED COASTAL CITY
Welcome to Manhattan Beach, California.
Manhattan Beach is a small but coveted coastal city in the southwestern part of Los Angeles County, situated on the Pacific Coast south of El Segundo and north of Hermosa Beach. The city, which is home to around 35,700 people, is one of three beach cities in the South Bay area. Manhattan Beach is an affluent area, and even the more modest dwellings are often very expensive compared to other areas in Los Angeles County. The city has one public high school, the Mira Costa High School, and the Manhattan Beach Unified School District's test scores rank #3 in the State of California. According to an article in the Beach Reporter, the city of Manhattan Beach has the most educated residents of all cities in California. The history of Manhattan Beach goes back to 1863, when a Scottish immigrant named Sir Robert Burnett purchased Rancho Sausal Redondo and Rancho Aquale de la Centinela. Ten years later, he leased the ranch to a Canadian named Daniel Freeman and returned to Scotland, while Mr. Freeman moved with his family to the ranch and started growing crops. Another landowner, George H. Peck, had the land that later became the north section of Manhattan Beach, and the town's name was the result of a coin flip. In 1902, the beach suburb was named Manhattan after developer Steward Merrill's home in Manhattan, New York city. Beach was added to the name in 1927. Manhattan Beach is home to numerous high profile individuals in both the sports and entertainment industry, thanks to the area's oceanfront desirability, top performing school district and easy commute to Los Angeles. In 2014, GQ Magazine chose Manhattan Beach as one the six best beaches in the United States. With 2.1 miles of ocean frontage, Manhattan Beach is a popular spot for activities like beach volleyball and surfing. In August each year, the city hosts the Manhattan Beach Open Volleyball Tournament and the International Surf Festival. Both events are immensely popular and attract hundreds of surfers and players and tens of thousands of spectators. The beach itself attracts over 3.8 million visitors annually, who come to enjoy the clean, wide beaches. In 2011, CNN Money named Manhattan Beach No.1 as the Best Places for the Rich and Single, while The Travel Channel named it the 9th Sexiest Beach on Earth. With a gorgeous oceanfront, terrific public parks and schools, as well as lots of wonderful little restaurants, cafes, and boutiques; it's now wonder that Manhattan Beach is considered one of the best places to live in Los Angeles County.
