MACARTHUR PARK
A LITTLE CENTRAL AMERICA
Welcome to a taste of Central America.
MacArthur Park, named so for the actual park at its center, is dense, green and affordable, and it lies just beneath the shadows of Downtown LA. With a bandshell for concerts, and a lake brimming with ducks, the park, Designated City of Los Angeles Historic Cultural Monument #100, is at once a peaceful yet lively sanctuary for locals. The sites, sounds and scents in the streets reflect the strong Central American presence here. Have a late night hankering for blue corn quesadillas, filled with corn fungus or squash blossoms? Just head out into what amounts to a food fair on any given night, and join the throngs of faithfuls at food carts dotting the streets. And look for Langer's Delicatessen on 7th Street, on the corner of Alvarado. This LA institution, since 1947, has been serving what many think is the best pastrami sandwich in the country. With largely low-rise housing, and many apartment conversions of majestic old mansions, and multiple high-rises, living options are diverse and plentiful, MacArthur Park is finding renewed popularity with Downtown professionals seeking easy access to Downtown, but lower rents. And with the Metro Red Line stop, transportation options couldn't be better for this highly walkable, family-friendly area.
