Welcome to Lower Haight, San Francisco.
This place was referred to as the Pine Valley during the 1970s, and it was all due to the abundance of pine trees that decorated the area. The name Lower Haight comes from the sharp elevation change as Haight Street travels steeply from Scott Street to Buena Vista Park. Lower Haights can be defined by its colorful community, and the neighborhood features a plethora of establishments like warm restaurants, intimate nightclubs, cozy cafes and voguish galleries. The area differs from Upper Haights in that it has a more diverse population and less retail stores but what it lacks in commercial construction it makes up for in personality. If you don't care for the adorned exterior of the Victorian houses of Haight/Ashbury, you get a great tradeoff here with cheaper rent and a funky, bohemian atmosphere. In addition, you'll have perfectly convenient access to several MUNI bus and metro lines, and bikers can take the efficient bicycle trail called The Wiggle towards the Golden Gate Park and surrounding neighborhoods. Biking is in fact so popular in this area that studies have shown that nowhere in San Francisco do people ride their two-wheelers to the same extent as in Lower Haights!
