California, U.S.A.
Welcome to Loma Linda, California.
Situated in San Bernardino County, the city of Loma Linda was incorporated in 1970 and is home to around 23,700 people. Loma Linda means beautiful hill in Spanish, and center of the city was originally known as Mound City, while the eastern half of Loma Linda was once an unincorporated community named Bryn Mawr. The city is home to the Loma Linda University; a higher learning institution focusing on health sciences and is run by the Seventh-day Adventist Church. The university boasts a renowned medical center, which performed the first baboon-to-human heart transplant and the first split-brain surgery. The innovative hospital was even featured in Venom ER, an Animal Planet program, because of its snakebite treatments. One of the most distinctive things about Loma Linda is its many Seventh-day Adventists; the city has the largest concentration of these in the world. In fact, because of the large number of residents who are Seventh-day Adventists, Loma Linda is one of the few cities that for a long time provided weekend mail delivery on Sundays instead of Saturdays. Many Seventh-day Adventists are vegetarians; hence most restaurants in the city offer an additional vegetarian menu. Furthermore, alcohol sales are strictly regulated, smoking is banned and its largest supermarket doesn't sell meat. Perhaps the healthy living is one of the reasons why Adventists in Loma Linda have one of the highest rates of longevity in the world the city is one of the four places in the world to have a significant number of residents live past 100 years.
