LITHONIA
Georgia, U.S.A.
CITY OF STONE
Welcome to Lithonia, Georgia. This little city is home to around 2,000 people, but along with the unincorporated communities that share its name, the number ends up around 15,000.
Located in eastern DeKalb County of the Atlanta metropolitan area, Lithonia is means city/town of stone. The name is suiting since the town lies in the heart of the Georgian granite-quarrying region. The city of Lithonia was once a small crossroads settlement filled with farmers, which grew as the Atlanta Augusta Railroad came into place in 1845. It is also the birthplace of Lithonia Lighting Company, one of North America's biggest light fixture manufacturers. Travel down to the Lithonia Historic District and discover the heart of the city, featuring bustling commercial activity surrounded by residential buildings. Lithonia boasts stunning restored architecture in styles including Second Empire, Queen Anne, Folk Victorian, Craftsman and many more. Commercial buildings include single and multiple story retail shops as well as office buildings, as well as the newer Lithonia Plaza Shopping center. Residential areas are beautiful and historical with classical antique and mid-century homes, often featuring locally quarried granite and gneiss. Landmarks to visit include the Masonic Lodge, the Lithonia Women's Club and several prominent churches like the Lithonia First Methodist Church. If you're interested in a real shopping spree, head to the super-regional shopping center called Mall at Stonecrest, which features an abundance of stores and serves the northern area of the Arabia Mountain area. Finally, residents have access to ample green space, including the Browns Mill Recreation Center, Bruce Street Park and the Davidson-Arabia Mountain Preserve.
