California, U.S.A.
Welcome to La Mesa, California.
Home to around 57,000 people, the City of La Mesa is situated 9 miles east of Downtown San Diego. The city's motto is The Jewel of the Hills. La Mesa means the table or the plateau in Spanish, relating to the city's geographical position in the hills. Originally, La Mesa was part of a larger tract used by Spanish Missionaries; Mission San Diego de Alcala. The city was founded in 1869 and incorporated in 1912, and the official La Mesa flower is the bougainvillea. La Mesa has plenty to offer its residents, including a terrific Farmer's Market in La Mesa Village every Friday afternoon, an annual Flag Day Parade, and an Oktoberfest. The Back to the 50's Car Show is one of the most popular summer events, where classic car enthusiasts gather to display their vehicles. Every year in June and July, La Mesa features the Sunday's At Six, a free concert series performed in Harry Griffen Park. Visitors can stroll down the La Mesa Walkway of the Stars, a beautiful pedestrian walkway that has been transformed into an urban park in downtown La Mesa, or visit the Grossmont Center; an outdoor shopping mall with tenants like Macy's, Barnes & Noble and a movie theatre. The center is La Mesa's major mall, and was opened in 1961 at the time it was the largest development in La Mesa's history. Schools in La Mesa belong to two districts; the La Mesa-Spring Valley School District, which operates most of the middle and elementary schools in the city, and the Grossmont Union High School District, which operates Helix High School and the Gateway day schools.
