Welcome to La Jolla, California.
La Jolla is a wealthy and hilly seaside community in San Diego, home to around 42,800 people. Boasting 7 miles of curving Pacific Ocean coastline and surrounded on three sides by bluffs and beaches; La Jolla is situated 12 miles from Downtown San Diego. La Jolla is known as the home to University of California, San Diego; the Salk Institute; Scripps Institute of Oceanography; Scripps Research Institute, and the headquarters of National University. Orignially, the Native Americans called the location mat kulaaxuuy, meaning the land of holes. The name probably derived from the sea-level caves located on the north-facing bluffs, which can be seen from La Jolla's shores. It is thought that the Spanish settlers translated the native description to La Jolla. Another theory is that this was simply another spelling of the Spanish wording la joya meaning the jewel, which has given rise to the nickname Jewel City. Modern day La Jolla offers the best of Southern California's relaxed lifestyle, with an abundance of outdoor recreation, dining places and shopping. Stroll down any given street in La Jolla and you'll find a vast range of diverse options ranging from internationally acclaimed restaurants to hole-in-the-wall sidewalk cafes and local favorites. For every occasion, La Jolla has just the perfect place to satisfy your hunger. Try Bubba's Smokehouse BBQ for mouthwatering southern style ribs, or Bistro Pazzo for fine dining. When you're done satisfying the cravings of your taste buds, check out the endless shopping scene in La Jolla. From antiques to jewelry and home decor, upscale to low-key, haute couture to casual, La Jolla boasts stores and boutiques of every kind. Besides, looking for treasures in a quaint seaside village is far less stressful than perusing the crowded shops at a modern mall! La Jolla is a true gem for outdoor enthusiasts, with an unparalleled grandeur and some of the best beaches in the state. The wide beaches and hidden coves are surrounded by dramatic cliffs and expansive views, allowing everyone to find their very own favorite place to enjoy their particular interest whether it's sunbathing, swimming or surfing La Jolla has just the spot for you. If you're an avid surfer, advance your skills at the Windansea Beach with its underwater reefs, jutting rocks and fierce waves, and if you're with kids head to the La Jolla Children's Pool. You'll find the best swimming, snorkeling and diving location in San Diego at the La Jolla Cove, where the water is calm and home to a colorful range of garibaldi, yellowtails, rays and occasionally leopard sharks! If you just feel like resting on a towel with a book in your hand, head to the cozy La Jolla Shores; and if you want a more private beach (where in some parts clothes are not required) check out Black's Beach. Golfers will find a real haven in La Jolla, which boasts three breathtaking courses including the Torrey Pines Golf Course, La Jolla Country Club and the Spindrift Course. Hikers can head up the La Jolla Walking Trail, which runs from La Jolla Shores Beach to La Jolla Cove quite an easy walk but with a wonderful scenery. Green parks are scattered throughout the city as well, including the gorgeous and expansive Ellen Browning Scripps Park, which has been called the most photographed spot in San Diego. The family-friendly Kellogg Park lies close to the beach and features a playground, while the picturesque Cuvier Park is perfect for weddings with unobstructed views of the water. Art connoisseurs and culture buffs will find several activities to engage in, like visiting the Museum of Contemporary Arts San Diego-La Jolla or the La Jolla Athenaeum Music & Arts Library; the latter boasts resources and programs found no where else in the region. With the cultural energy of a big city but the convenience of a small community, La Jolla is home to a vibrant entertainment scene. Visit the La Jolla Playhouse for artsy plays, the Birch Aquarium at Scripps for fun with the whole family, and the legendary, celebrity-studded Comedy Store for a night with friends!
