JACKSONVILLE
Florida, U.S.A.
JAX
Welcome to the largest deepwater port in the South, the second-largest port on the US East coast, and a major operational military port, giving Jacksonville, Florida the third-largest naval presence in the nation. Countless automobile imports enter America through Jacksonville, but the area is also deeply involved in the industries of distribution, financial services, biomedical technology, consumer goods, information services and manufacturing. Not just a business leader of the state, Jacksonville has impacted the culture of the whole South East. Home to the Sun-Ray Cinema, the first theater to show "talking pictures" in Florida and the third to do so in the nation, Jacksonville has acted as a pioneer in entertainment for the region. The Ritz and Knights of Pythias Hall welcomed countless musicians throughout Southern history, especially leading black artists like Duke Ellington, Ray Charles and Ella Fitzgerld. Leading artists from a variety of genres continue to sell out these iconic Florida venues. Today, the nation's second-largest jazz festival still occurs in Jacksonville, and the Jacksonville Film Festival takes place at seven of the city's historic venues. The city's rich history fuels local museums and galleries. These events and venues, along with major marathons, sporting events, fishing tournaments and livestock exhibitions, attract people from around the nation - and the World - to help maintain tourism revenue. Jacksonville is comprised of over 500 neighborhoods in a humid subtropical climate, featuring mild winters, moist summers, and plenty of rain from May to September. Summer thunderstorms can occur, but brief drizzles are more common.
