Mississippi, U.S.A.
Welcome to Jackson, Mississippi.
Jackson is situated on the Pearl River, and with around 173,500 residents, it is capital and largest city in the state of Mississippi. The city was named after General Andrew Jackson of the Battle of New Orleans in the war of 1812, who later became President of the United States. Jackson is called City with Soul, because of its numerous prominent musicians in blues, gospel and jazz. For decades, the city was notorious for its illegal nightclubs on the Gold Coast, and part of the area has been designated as a historical site on the Mississippi Blues Trail. Jackson is a city with a soul for another reason as well, namely its many friendly citizens. Locals are known for being warm and welcoming, and perhaps it is the excellent quality of life that makes them so happy. The city boasts an abundance of family-friendly destinations and hundreds of community events ranging from heritage festivals to symphony concerts and sports classics it's no wonder that Jackson has been named among the Best Bang For Your Buck cities by Forbes Magazine. History and culture buffs have a plethora of options, with vast number of museums and attractions, including historic Civil War and Civil Rights sites and numerous jazz, gospel, and blues venues. Listen to some of the most talented live musicians in the country while enjoying authentic southern cooking or international flavors, at one of the 300 plus restaurants in the great city of Jackson. If you're looking to be a tourist for the day, check out the Civil Rights Movement at Smith Robertson Museum and Cultural Center, or imagine the cheering crowd at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum. The latter has been named among the Top 10 Most Amazing Baseball Museums in America by ESPN, so don't forget to stop by! Kids might enjoy a fun day at the Jackson Zoological Park, or the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science. While you're in town, don't forget to grab a bite to eat at one of the authentic blues juke joints that make the City with Soul it really is.
