Missouri, U.S.A.
Welcome to Independence, Missouri.
Independence is home to around 117,000 people and located in Jackson County, part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The city is known as Queen City of the Trails, because it was once the departure point for the California, Oregon and Santa Fe Trails. Founded in 1827, Independence was named after the Declaration of Independence, and was the hometown of the former U.S. President Harry S. Truman. Political history buffs can find out more about his life in the city and as a president at the Truman Presidential Library and Museum. Both Truman and the former First Lady Bess Truman are actually buried right here in Independence. There are plenty of attractions in Independence, ranging from museums to movie theaters, water parks and ghost tours. Those who enjoy a little bit of spookiness should head over to the Vaile Mansion, which is rumored to be haunted by Mrs. Vaile herself. Pioneers, risk-takers, dreamers and doers can walk in the path of the three trails, or hop on a mule-drawn wagon and tour the historic Independence Square. Or why not visit the actual jail that once held the notorious gangster Frank James behind bars? The options are endless in this city of rich American history. Foodies have lots to choose from as well, as Independence boasts over 200 dining destinations serving everything from home-cooked food to fancy dinners and traditional BBQ. So prepare your taste buds for a real experience, as Independence leaves no flavor out! Shopaholics will not be disappointed, as the Independence Center Mall features ore than 150 stores, including major anchor tenants like Macy's, Forever 21, Coach and hundreds of other popular retailers. So bring your wallet and prepare to go home with lots of bags filled to the brimming point!
