Welcome to Arts Up the Hill. Pittsburgh's hilly Garfield neighborhood lies on the city's East End and it's where new blood and new ideas are coming together to create a new scene on the city's landscape. Garfield's become a haven for artists and start-ups of the creative sort, so head here for innovative performance art or to see the latest gallery exhibit of local up-and-comers. Penn Avenue is where the action is, and following a 1990's initiative to revitalize the blighted area by attracting artists, it's blossomed and become a model for future revitalization in other communities on the path of resurgence, It's admirably more affordable than much of Pittsburgh, with blocks of row houses, many ripe for renovation, as such attracting pioneer and working artist types. And it's filled with an energy unmatched by other neighborhoods as it continues to grow and change. Residents enjoy walking and biking it's eclectic streets, taking in the unique dining and shopping options. It's young trendsetters who have implanted themselves in Garfield, but the neighborhood remains home to many who have called it home for generations. Long-standing traditions like the annual Thanksgiving "Turkey Bowl' lend a local flavor to Garfield and add further to it's unmistakable charm.
