Welcome to It's All Victorian. Just look at those homes! Strictly residential, Pittsburgh's east-end neighborhood of Friendship, is unique due to its housing stock.
The Victorians of Friendship, located on rare flat streets, showcase the beauty and grandeur of the era, with many of the signature Victorian details, like decorative trim, stained glass, and ornate moldings, still in place. Built in the 1800s, these signature homes were once owned by the city's wealthier residents and housed large families. Left empty after suburbanization saw the flight of homeowners out of the city, blight set-in in the 60's, and absentee-landlords stepped in, converting single family homes into multi-family rental units. But in the 90's like-minded visionaries saw the potential in this well-located and low-cost neighborhood, and organized to purchase homes, many converting them back to single-families and to their original splendor. The possibility of ownership at a cost much lower than that of surrounding communities continues to draw artists, young professionals and families, making it the stunningly vibrant and model community that it is today.
