FRESNO
California, U.S.A.
THE HEART OF JOAQUIN VALLEY
Welcome to Fresno, California. Fresno is the county seat of Fresno County and home to around 509, 000 people, making it the 5th largest city in California. The city is located in the heart of San Joaquin Valley approximately 200 miles north of Los Angeles. The name Fresno means “ash tree” in Spanish, which is why an ash tree leaf is featured on the city flag. Downtown Fresno has undergone major changes in recent years, with many old and abandoned buildings being rebuilt and remodeled. Some have been demolished and replaced with new structures, like the Grizzlies Stadium and the Federal Courthouse. Eventually, the city plans to include several high-rise buildings in the development, which may pose a threat to some of the unique and unfortunately rare 20th century structures. Fresno still has a few significant historic neighborhoods left however, including Fulton Mall and Chinatown. These areas are home to some of the largest clusters of historical buildings in California, and chances are that these will be preserved with official, national recognition. One of the more popular neighborhoods in Fresno is the Tower District, which is centered round the historic Tower Theatre. The theater is featured on the National List of Historic Places and was built in 1939 in the core of the district. The neighborhood was long mainly residential, but today the area is filled with mom n’ pop stores and various services. The vibrant and diverse district features a plethora of cool entertainment venues, like the Roger Rocka’s Dinner Theatre & Good Company Players, where Broadway star Audra McDonald once performed. The Tower District is also where most of the community events are held, and oh boy there are many in Fresno! Take a pick – Jamaica My Weekend, Mardi Gras, Gay Pride Parade, Car Shows, A Taste of The Tower… residents of Fresno are certainly no strangers to a merry time!
