FOLSOM PRISON BLUES
Welcome to Folsom, California.
The city is located in Sacramento County, and has a population of around 73,000 people. Folsom is mainly know for the Folsom State Prison; the second oldest prison in California after San Quentin. It was opened 135 years ago and was the first prison to feature to electricity and maximum security. The legendary singer Johnny Cash is the main reason why Folsom is a name people tend to remember. Mr. Cash, aka The Man in Black, wrote the song Folsom Prison Blues in the 1950's, which he later performed in front of the inmates of Folsom Prison. However, Folsom Prison is not the only notable thing about this city. This culturally diverse town features a range of recreation like an aquatic center, a city zoo, several history museums and plenty of parks. The Folsom Parks and Recreation Department provides residents with fully equipped facilities where people of all ages can take part in swim lessons, specialty camps, culinary arts lessons, sports and fitness events and more. The city also has an extensive layout for bike lanes and pedestrian trails, primarily along Humbug Creek and Willow Creek. One thing that visitors can't miss is the Johnny Cash Trail Art Experience, which was inaugurated in 2014. The architecture along the trail is designed to mimic Folsom Prison, and actually travels across Folsom State Prison property. The trail isn't entirely finished, but in 2016-2017 it's expected to feature a two-acre park with a world-class art exhibition, celebrating the community of Folsom. One would think that the trail is all about Johnny Cash, but it is actually named after him as an honor for putting Folsom on the map. The city believes that the Johnny Cash Trail will become a major tourist destination, so it's definitely worth keeping your eyes open for!
