Cambridge, MA
Welcome to East Cambridge, Cambridge.
This neighborhood is home to around 7,000 people and is situated by the Charles River, bounded by the Boston & Albany Railroad, Somerville and Kendall Square. Around the 1850s, during the industrial era, East Cambridge was a blue-collar neighborhood with a large immigrant population. For a long time, East Cambridge was home to major manufacturing and industrial buildings, however since the 1980s there have been huge changes in infrastructure. Old industrial areas have turned into vibrant commercial districts, and modern retail developments have popped up throughout. The oldest residential part of East Cambridge is situated in the middle of the neighborhood, and features a large commercial and transit center at Lechmere Square and Kendall Square. There is also a bustling retail strip along Cambridge Street, which has long been a neighborhood focal point. The southern section of East Cambridge houses a previous industrial area, which lies adjacent to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. This part of the neighborhood now functions as the location for many office buildings and research labs, as well as a plethora of newer apartment buildings. If you go down to the beautiful Charles River waterfront, you'll find large hotels, fancy apartment buildings and condos, technology business buildings as well as a regional shopping mall. Those interested in knowing how the world works can head to the Boston Museum of Science, also located by the riverfront.
