DOWNTOWN BOSTON
THE HEART OF BOSTON
Welcome to Downtown, Boston.
This historic part of Boston is the central business district of the city and also the largest commercial area. The neighborhood is home to many corporate giants as well as several federal government entities. Downtown is not all business however; the area also features many of Boston's favorite tourist attractions and has recently been subject to much revitalization with new condos and hip lofts, as well as restoration of historical buildings. The revival has drawn a large influx of new businesses and residents, wanting to take part of the new and exciting downtown. Before the city's steep incline in the 1860's and 1870's, the Historic Downtown area comprised pretty much the entire city. Unfortunately, the Great Boston Fire in 1872 ruined much of the neighborhood, but several landmarks still remain intact. Some of the historical places include the Greenway, Customhouse, City Hall, Quincy Market, Old South Meeting House, Boston Public Garden and Boston Common. Cultural buffs can check out the Museum of Fine Arts and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, as well as the Museum of Science and Little Brewster Island. Much of Downtown's particular character is anchored in its rich diversity, with a colorful mix of commercial and residential buildings, old and new. These blocks are home to world-class theaters and a bustling restaurant scene, as well as a vibrant nightlife and a plethora of shopping options. In addition, the downtown is filled with an abundance of different cultures, contributing to the vivacious atmosphere. If you come here to shop or eat, rest assured you'll be in good hands, as downtown Boston features over 200 retailers and over 100 restaurants!
