Welcome to Des Moines, Iowa.
Des Moines is the Capital of Iowa and the county seat of Polk County, and home to around 203,433 people. The city was incorporated in 1851 as Fort Des Moines after the Des Moines River, but the name was shortened to just Des Moines a few years later. Des Moines comprises a major center for the American insurance industry, and is one of the top spots for national insurance companies. The city is home to headquarters of giants like Athene USA Insurance, Principal Financial Group and Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield. In addition, the city houses other large offices of companies like Wells Fargo, Hewlett Packard and Facebook. In 2010 and 2013, Forbes Magazine named Des Moines Best Place for Business, and in 2014, NBC ranked it the Wealthiest City in America. The City of Des Moines is offers residents a lively culture scene, with many art and history museums and performing arts groups. Thespians can visit the venue of Des Moines Performing Arts for Broadway shows and other live theater, and music and dance lovers can head to the Des Moines Metro Opera for outstanding performances and award-winning educational programs. Worth visiting is also the Des Moines Art Center, which exhibits an internationally renowned collection, ranging from 19th century artwork to modern pieces. Residents of Des Moines are blessed with plenty of green space, as the city boasts 76 parks and also offers 3 aquatic centers, 3 public pools and 5 community centers. Swing by the Gray's Lake Park, where you can rent boats, fish and enjoy other leisurely activities; or take a stroll or bike around the many trails the city features. Head to the historical East Village of Downtown Des Moines, a walkable neighborhood with more than 85 local shops, bars and restaurants. This area is truly a shopper's dream, with everything from small boutiques to fancy stores and upscale dining places. The downtown area is filled with an eclectic variety of local shops, while the city's outskirts is where you'll find the larger chain and department stores.
