COTATI
California, U.S.A.
THE HUB OF SONOMA COUNTY
Welcome to the City of Cotati, California. Like the rest of Sonoma County, Cotati is part of the San Francisco Bay Area and the Redwood Empire, and the town has a population of around 7,000 people. The city was founded in 1963, and while it is the smallest city in the county, the Cotati slogan states “The Hub of Sonoma County”, because of its centralized location. Downtown Cotati has a very distinct layout, and is one of America’s only two hexagonal plazas. A man named Newton Smyth designed the street grid plan and plaza in the 1890’s as an alternative to the traditional town layout. Back then, there was a barn in the middle of where the plaza, which belonged to a Dr. Thomas Page. As a result, all of the streets are now each named after one of his sons. This little hexagonal town has a lot to offer despite its size. Every Thursday evening, Cotati turns into one of the liveliest venues in the whole county. The Sonoma State University brings a bundle of students who saturate downtown, excited to take part in the so-called “Cotati Crawl”. During the Cotati Crawl, youngsters between 21-30 years of age head down the two blocks of downtown Cotati to engage in serious barhopping. The bar round goes between The 8 Ball, The TradeWinds, Friar Tuck’s Pub, Spancky’s Bar and finally, The Cotati Yacht Club. This only happens once a week, and only on Thursdays – because frankly, who can take more partying than that?
