The city is a major regional suburb 31 miles east of San Francisco, and its focal point is the downtown Todos Santos Plaza, which encompasses an entire city block. Much of the surrounding downtown areas have been revived with new apartment and condominium projects, where developers have taken advantage of the proximity to public transportation and vibrant area around the downtown park. To the north and east of midtown Concord lies the older residential area, where many homes date all the way back to pre-World War II. The north edge of the city is mainly an industrial area, while the southeastern area is primarily residential with construction from the 1950s-1970s. The southwest area is a predominately Latino neighborhood called Four Corners, and is centered round the intersection of Monument Boulevard and Oak Grove Road. Concord offers a plethora of parks, including the Willow Pass Community Park, Ygnacio Valley Park, Newhall Community Park and Dave Brubeck Park. The Hillcrest Park is home to Matteo's Dream, a unique playground for children of all abilities a wonderful initiative where kids who cannot walk, hear or see, can play safely alongside those who can. Concord residents can drop quite a lot of celebrity names, since a number of them have lived in the city at one point or another. Jazz musician Dave Brubeck was born in Concord, and in even had a park renamed in his honor.
