Virginia, U.S.A.
Welcome to Chesapeake, Virginia.
Chesapeake is situated in the heart of Coastal Virginia, and home to little above 222,200 people. This diverse city offers a distinct mix of urban and rural settings, with an abundance of protected farmland, forests and wetland, as well as plenty of public amenities. Chesapeake is a both desirable travel destination and place to live, offering visitors and residents a winning combination of accommodations, attractions and activities. Thanks to its central Mid-Atlantic location, you'll never be far away from anything. Within just a day's drive or a few hours flight, you can be anywhere in the country. Residents can get to and from the city through interstate highways and the Norfolk International Airport, as well as two executive airports. The history of Chesapeake goes back to 1620, when the first settlers arrived in the area. Chesapeake colonists celebrated an important victory during the American Revolution, when they won the epic Battle of Great Bridge in 1775. The victory was a key event in emancipating the Colony of Virginia from the British Government, and each December, Revolutionary War re-enactors recreate this great happening. After the Civil War, Chesapeake thrived as an agricultural center, thanks to its rich farmland and access to deep, navigable waters. The city was officially incorporated in 1963, and today Chesapeake is a flourishing, modern metro. Visitors and residents of this fabulous coastal town have access to everything from culture, arts, shopping and dining, as well as outdoor recreation. Culture buffs can enjoy first-class contemporary art at the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art, or a performance at the historic 1908 landmark The American Theatre. If music is your thing, head to the NorVa venue for amazing concerts, or take in the atmosphere at Symphony Under the Stars in Chesapeake City Park! In terms of shopping, Chesapeake lacks nothing. With lots of hip little shops and bohemian retail stores, the city offers patrons three major shopping centers in the Hampton Roads region. For more fashionable items, head to the Greenbrier Mall or Chesapeake Square Mall, both featuring well-known department stores and a variety of upscale options. For dining and wining, check out the new Towne Place at the Greenbrier, where you'll find an abundance of family friendly restaurants, accessible walkways and a large outdoor entertainment plaza. Finally, don't forget to revel in the incredible nature around Chesapeake, as the city features some of the best-reserved, natural spots on the east coast. Explore wildlife in the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge; or fish, hike and kayak in the beautiful Lake Drummond. Regardless of your preference, Chesapeake is a city that suits any flavor!
