BANKHEAD
THE BANKHEAD BOUNCE
Welcome to Bankhead, Atlanta. This neighborhood is situated west of Downtown, surrounded by the lush Grove and Washington Parks, as well as Hunter Hills and Midtown West.
Bankhead's name derives from what was previously called Bankhead Highway, a passage that's been renamed Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway. At the core of the neighborhood lie the MARTA station and the Maddox Park, a 51.5 acre green community space named after former Atlanta Mayor Robert Maddox. The park features a playground and areas for ballgames, as well as a picnic area. The neighborhood is home to several schools, including The B.E.S.T Academy, Grove Park Elementary, A.D Williams Elementary, Carter G. Woodson Elementary as well as Frederick Douglass High School. The city has recently begun to revitalize the area with things like an artist community holding 20 studio spaces, called the English Avenue Yards. The studio space functions as a workshop the famed Alliance Theatre Company, Atlanta Ballet and Atlanta Opera. Furthermore, new construction is taking place on Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway and Oliver Street, such as a new Shell gas station. While a low-key community, Bankhead boasts quite a few famous artists. T.I Young, Dem Franchize Boyz, Unk, Shop Boyz and Shawty Lo have all called Bankhead home at some point. In addition, the Bankhead Bounce dance performed by Michael Jacksom at the MTV Music Awards was named after the neighborhood.
